The master from Askat
Abstract
The article examines the artistic work and life path of the Altai painter Vyacheslav S. Torbokov (1956–2026), the author of the portrait gallery of prominent Russian thinkers at the Institute of Philosophy of Saint Petersburg State University. The author outlines the periods of the artist’s biography (Moscow, Gorno-Altaysk, and Askat periods) and the main directions of his creative work, which demonstrate that he was a major representative of the realistic movement in the art of Gorny Altai, continuing the tradition of G.I. Gurkin. It is noted that the very nature of Gorny Altai lends itself to plein-air landscape painting, which occupies an important place in Torbokov’s heritage; he created memorable views of his native region’s nature. Torbokov also proved himself to be an outstanding master of still life, with his best works entering the treasury of contemporary Siberian art. However, portrait painting became his true calling. The pinnacle of Torbokov’s work is the painting “Rest by the Road. Portrait of the Mother” (2008), which embodies the national type of beauty and expresses the worldview of an Altai person who treats nature with reverence. In his portraits of philosophers who worked at Saint Petersburg University (V.S. Solovyov, S.L. Frank, I.I. Lapshin, A.I. Vvedensky, S.I. Hessen, G.P. Fedotov, N.O. Lossky, L.P. Karsavin), he managed to create canonical images of Russian thinkers. The painter’s last major work was another portrait of G.I. Gurkin titled “The Return of the Master” (2023), which can be considered the artist’s testament. This study sheds light on his unique cultural contribution. His profound legacy continues to inspire future generations of Siberian realistic painters alike.
