Translation of “The Revelations of the Blessed Angela” into Russian, made by L. P. Karsavin, and its meaning
Abstract
The author of the article deals with Karsavin’s translation of “The Revelations of Angela of Foligno” analyzing it in the context of the his-torical science of Russia at the beginning of the 20th century. The author describes the Augus-tinian current in the universities and Orthodox theological academies to show the background of the work of prof. I. M. Grevs and his fol-lower Karsavin. This scientific current is con-sidered as part of the European translatio stu-diorum. It is argued that in the works “Speculum Perfectionis and its sources” and “The magnates of the end of the Roman Empire eve-ryday life and religion)” Karsavin relied upon Grevs’s concepts of the “genetic” linking of facts and the “internal” process in history to develop his own understanding of a fact as a multiple extent in space and time and as a psy-chophysical experience determining events, chronicles, legends in the series of moments making up the whole historical period. On this basis, Karsavin explains the concepts of “reli-giosity”, “religious foundation”, “religiosity of the average person”. The concepts of “faith”, “religiosity” and “mysticism” from Karsavin’s master’s and doctoral dissertations are ana-lyzed. Faith is treated by Karsavin as a tradition of worship, as a historical phenomenon, and as the “living faith” of a person, a group of believ-ers, and a church. Religiousness is associated with a person and expresses faith in its entirety and perfection or shows its insufficiency and perversion. Mystical experience, according to Karsavin, is the expression of faith and religios-ity in their integrity and in the unity with God.
